Girl 3 killed following collision between tram and van in Manchester City Centre

A girl aged three sadly died after being struck following a collision between a metrolink tram and a van confirm Greater Manchester Police.

We understand that efforts are ongoing to locate the driver of the van who fled the scene before the arrival of emergency services.

In a statement released today, A Gretaer Manchester Police spokesman said:

“Emergency services are responding to reports of a collision involving a tram and a van in Manchester city centre.

A three-year-old girl was taken to hospital and sadly passed away from her injuries.

“No arrests have been made, and enquiries are ongoing.”

The collision happened on Mosely Street, and a cordon remains in place whilst investigations are carried out.

A spokesperson for TFGM said earlier:

Due to a road traffic collision on Mosley Street in the city centre, no tram services are operating between St Peter’s Square and Piccadilly Gardens.

“As a result, there are several service changes in place.

“Services will operate as follows: Manchester Airport and Bury to Altrincham services will travel via via 2cc [Exchange Square]; Altrincham – Manchester Victoria via Exchange Square; MediaCityUk – Crumpsall via Exchange Square; Ashton-under-Lyne – Crumpsall via Market Street and Shudehill.

“There is a step-free walking route between St Peter’s Square and Piccadilly Gardens, which will take you approximately seven minutes.”

Assistant Chief Constable Stephanie Parker said:

“Firstly, I would like to send my condolences to the family of the victim. This is a tragic incident where a young girl has sadly lost her life.

Our investigation is ongoing and we are investigating a number of lines of enquiry. This is being treated as an isolated incident with no wider threat to the community.

Officers will remain on patrol in the city centre, if you have any concerns please speak to our officers and raise them as they are here to help and assist.

We are appealing to any witnesses and anyone who may have saw the van driver leave his vehicle to get in touch with us. Please contact police on 0161 856 4741 quoting the log number 1086 of 22/02/25.

In an update released on Sunday, Greater Manchester Police said a suspect had been identified, and work was ongoing to take them into custody.
