Man charged following Sheffield City Centre bomb hoax stand-off

Sheffield City Centre was in lockdown for over 30 hours following the incident on Monday night

A man has been charged following a stand-off in Sheffield City Centre.

A large cordon was put in place around an apartment block on Broad Street following a concern for welfare call of a man inside a property potentially armed with weapons.

Negotiations continued for 36 hours before the man was arrested by specialist armed officers in the early hours of Tuesday morning.

In an update posted today, South Yorkshire Police said:

“Today (Thursday 12 February) a 47-year-old man has been charged in connection to the critical incident in Sheffield city centre, earlier this week.

On Monday (10 February) just after 7pm, were responded to an incident concerning a man inside a property on Broad Street, alleged to be in possession of weapons and posing a risk. To ensure the safety of the public, Broad Street and the Sheffield Parkway were closed, while emergency services including specialist trained officers conducted their work. Neighbouring properties were also evacuated, and residents displaced to nearby facilities.

Yaqub Younis, of Broad Street, Sheffield, is charged with affray, bomb hoax – communicate false information, intentionally / recklessly cause a public nuisance and criminal damage.

He will appear at Sheffield Magistrates’ Court on Friday (14 February).”
