Residents are asked to keep windows and doors closed if they smell smoke
A major fire has broke out at a new student accommodation block in Lancaster on Saturday afternoon.
Flames can be seen raging from the roof space area of the building in Caton Road with thick black smoke billowing across the city’s skies.
Six fire engines have been dispatched to tackle the fire, including a aerial ladder platform Lancashire Fire & Rescue Service said.
Residents are being asked to avoid the area and keep windows and doors closed if they smell smoke.
Multiple road closures are in place whilst emergency services deal with this incident.
In a statement released on social media, LFRS said;
“We have six fire engines in attendance at reports of a fire on Caton Road, Lancaster.
If you can see or smell smoke, please keep your windows and doors closed.
Please avoid the area.”
Lancashire Police said;
“We are currently assisting the fire service with an incident on PARLIAMENT ST LANCASTER.
This has resulted in numerous road closures:
CABLE STREET from Sainsburys towards Greyhound Bridge, PARLIAMENT ST (both directions), and BACK CATON ROAD are currently ALL CLOSED.
You are advised to avoid the area which may be closed for some time.
Lancashire Fire & Rescue Service said in an update:
“At 12:56 on the 8th February 2025, six fire engines and an aerial ladder platform attended a commercial building fire on Caton Road/Parliament Street, Lancaster. Firefighters utilised the aerial ladder platform and used three hose reel jets to extinguish the fire. Crews remain in attendance.”
“Update at 15:00: This incident has been reduced to three fire engines and the command support unit. Firefighters are monitoring and damping down remaining hotspots.”
