The fire is thought to have involved the roof space of the three story building
A major fire broke out at a town hall next to a leisure centre in Merseyside on Saturday.
Emergency services rushed to the Magull Town Hall, which was well alight just before midday in Hall Road in Maghull.
People are being asked to avoid the area as emergency services deal with the incident with road closures in place and nearby buildings evacuated.
In a statement released earlier, Merseyside Fire & Rescue Service said:
“Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service are in attendance at an incident on Hall Lane, Maghull.
Crews were alerted at 11.55 and on scene at 12.09, with ten fire engines and two aerial appliances at scene.
This is the roof space to a three storey building – Maghull Town Hall, well alight.
The incident has been sectorised with firefighters with two main branches fighting the blaze externally in sectors one and two.
Water supplies have been secured and the aerial appliance is being set up in sector three.
Merseyside Police are also in attendance maintaining cordons.
This is an ongoing incident, please avoid the area.
In a statement released earlier, Sefton Council said:
“We continue to support emergency services following a fire at Maghull Town Hall earlier today (01/02/2024).
Merseyside Fire & Rescue remain on scene and are working hard to ensure the building is safe.
While every effort is being made to
reopen the A59 (Northway) as soon as possible, significant delays are still likely, and we would ask all motorists to avoid the area
and seek alternative routes during this time.
We would once again like to place on record our thanks to our staff at Meadows Leisure Centre, who acted swiftly and calmly to
evacuate everyone safely from the building.
While the Centre remains closed to the public, the building will be open between 10am and 2pm tomorrow for those who were evacuated to collect their belongings, which were left behind.
