A referral to the Independent Office for Police Conduct has been made following the collision
An investigation is underway following a collision involving a police car that has left an officer seriously injured and a woman in critical condition.
In a statement released today, Cumbria Police said:
“Two people have been taken to hospital with serious injuries following a road traffic collision on Cleator Moor Road in Whitehaven.
The collision, which was reported at 7:50am today, involved a police car and a white Suzuki Celerio.
The police vehicle involved was responding to a separate emergency incident at the time of the collision.
The driver of the police vehicle is a male officer, aged in his 20s.
The driver of the Suzuki is a woman, aged in her 60s. Her condition is described as critical.
Cleator Moor Road remains closed whilst investigative enquiries are conducted. The road may remain closed for some time and motorists are advised to avoid the area.
The circumstances of the collision are being fully investigated. The incident was immediately referred to the Independent Office for Police Conduct, which is normal practice.
Specialist officers are supporting the family of the driver of the Suzuki.
