M61 Motorway remains closed for investigation work following early morning incident

The M61 motorway has been closed since around 5am on Saturday morning following the incident

A closure remains in place on the M61 motorway this afternoon following a police led incident.

Exact nature of the incident is yet to be disclosed by authorities.

The carriageway between junction 6 Horwich Interchange and junction 5 Hunger Hill Interchange have been closed in both directions since around 5am this morning.

The National Highways said online earlier:

“The M61 in Greater Manchester is closed in both directions J6 Horwich Interchange (Bolton (W), Horwich (A673) and J5 Hunger Hill Interchange (Westhoughton, Hindley, Deane A58) due to a serious, police-led incident.

Diversion Route
Road users southbound are advised to follow the solid diamond diversion symbol on road signs:

Leave the M61 south at J6 and at the roundabout take the third exit on the A6027.
Continue to the A6027/A6 roundabout and take the first exit onto the A6 southbound.
Follow the A6 to the A6/A58 roundabout and take the first exit onto the A58 eastbound.
Continue on the A58 back to the roundabout with the M61 J5 and take the 3rd exit to rejoin the M61 southbound.
Road users northbound are advised to follow the hollow circle diversion symbol on road signs:

Exit M61 at J5
At M61 J5/A58 roundabout take the 1st exit onto the A58 westbound.
At the A58/A6 (Chequerbent) roundabout take the 3rd exit onto the A6 northbound
At A6/A6027 roundabout, take the 2nd exit onto A6027 eastbound
At A6027/M61 J6 roundabout take the 1st exit and re-join the M61 northbound.
