Avoid the area where possible warn Cumbria Police whilst work is carried out at the scene
Three elderly residents have been rushed to hospital following a suspected gas explosion in Cumbria.
The explosion was first reported shortly before 4:30pm a residential property on News Years Eve in the Whitehaven area.
A large emergency service presence remains at the scene with homes evacuated. Members of the public are being advised to avoid the area where possible.
In a statement released earlier Cumbria Police said:
“Emergency services are currently in attendance following an incident in Hugh Street in Whitehaven this afternoon (31 Dec).
At 4.23pm a call was received reporting a suspected gas explosion at a residential address in the street.
Emergency services, including Police, Fire and NWAS have attended and three casualties – two men and a woman – have been taken from the scene to hospital by ambulance having suffered serious injuries.
Currently, all known persons are accounted for. However, work to confirm this remains on-going.
People are asked to avoid the area whilst emergency services personnel carry out their work at the scene.”
