Emergency services were called on Sunday morning to reports of a double stabbing in Moss Side
A murder investigation is underway in Manchester following the death of two people.
Emergency services rushed to the scene in Great Southern Street, Moss Side, and found two people suffering injuries. Despite the best efforts of emergency services, both were pronounced dead at the scene.
A cordon remains in place on Great Southern Street, and police are asking members of the public to avoid the area whilst investigations continue.
A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Police said earlier:
“There is an emergency services presence on Great Southern Street in Moss Side whilst officers respond to an incident.
“Police have attended and despite the best efforts of emergency services, two people were treated at the scene and have sadly been pronounced dead.
“We have arrested one man on suspicion of murder.
“Please avoid the area as there is a large emergency service presence while we establish the full circumstances of the incident this morning.”
There was a very eerie atmosphere around the scene this morning as forensic investigators carried out work at the scene.
Officers could be seen in white suits taking photographs of a bicycle that was in situ next to a car within the cordon.
Two forensic tents were erected, and a large police presence could be seen in the area.
We spoke with a resident living nearby who expressed her shock and horror to learn of the news this morning.
The woman who did not want to be named said:
“It’s shocking, I was horrified waking up this morning to all the police outside and learning of this double murder right on our doorstep. I don’t feel safe living in this area anymore.”
Greater Manchester Police have released a further statement this afternoon, A spokesperson for the force said:
“There is an emergency service presence on Great Southern Street in Moss Side this morning (Sunday 17 November 2024).
Officers were called at around 5am to reports that two people had been stabbed.
Officers alongside colleagues in the emergency services attended and despite the best efforts of first responders two men were treated at the scene for their injuries. They have both sadly been pronounced dead.
We have arrested one man in his 20s who has been arrested on suspicion of murder. He remains in custody for questioning and we are not looking for anyone else in connection with the incident.
We are treating this as an isolated incident with no threat to the wider public.
We thank the public for their cooperation and patience as there is a cordon in place on Great Southern Street and into the surrounding area. We are asking the public to continue avoiding the area as there is a large emergency service presence while we establish the full circumstances of the incident this morning. “
