Police release updated statement on Bootle grenade incident

Homes and businesses were evacuated as a precaution whilst emergency services dealt with the incident

Emergency services were called to Strand Road in Bootle shortly after 1pm on Monday afternoon to reports of a possible grenade inside the boot of a car.

Road closures were put in place with homes and businesses nearby evacuated so that the incident could be dealt with safely.

All three emergency services were in attendance.

A statement released by Merseyside Police initially said:

“We can confirm that emergency services are currently in Bootle attending to an incident this afternoon, Monday 4 November.

At around 1.10pm, we received a report of a possible grenade inside the boot of a car on Strand Road.

A cordon is in place and several homes and businesses have been evacuated as a precaution. There are also multiple road closures in place, so please avoid the area while emergency services deal with the incident.”

This morning they have released a further update. In a statement, Merseyside Police said:

“The Explosive Ordnance Disposal Unit has attended the scene on the Strand Road, Bootle. and the item has now detonated at a safe location. The car has been seized.

A police cordon has now been lifted. and residents have returned to their homes.

Thank you to members of the public, residents, and business owners for your patience while we dealt with this incident.”
