Those in breach of the PSPO can be given a Fixed Penalty Notice of £100 and fined a maximum of £1000
Several fireworks have been seized by Police from Rivington after individuals were spotted in possession of them as part of a Public Space Protection Order.
The Public Space Protection Order was introduced in August 2024 and runs until August 2026. It sets out a list of things that are prohibited in the area to prevent Moorland fires such as No Barbecues, No Fires, No Sky Lanterns, No Naked Flames and No Fireworks.
Those who choose to ignore this can be fined a maximum of £1000 or given a Fixed Penalty Notice of £100 under the Anti-Social Behaviour, Crime and Policing Act.
In a social media post, Chorley Police said:
“Last Night South Rural Task force, seized numerous fireworks from individuals up at Rivington. We would like to remind people of why the PSPO is in place.
This is to prevent the devastating impact that fires can have on Moorland. In 2018 fire crews spent 41 days extinguishing the wild fires. The fires had a huge impact on local residents, farmland and of course wildlife.
The long term impact of wildfires is significant, with the destruction of vegetation and their root systems leading to flooding.
The PSPO prohibits activities that carry a significant risk of causing wildfires in a designated area. These include the lighting of fires,BBQs, fireworks, sky lanterns, and using any article/object that causes a naked flame, which poses a risk of fire.. Please enjoy your countryside in a responsible way.”
