A56 Accrington Bypass Closed Towards Rising Bridge Due To Overturned Lorry

The A56 Accrington Bypass is currently closed due to an overturned lorry.

The incident happened shortly after 2pm this afternoon. Images from the scene show a lorry on its side across the carriageway with members of the public offering assistance.

One motorist took to social media to voice their concerns saying that they are stuck in the traffic, it looks bad, i hope no-one is seriously hurt.

Another said: Avoid Accrington Bypass, lorry tipped, emergency services are at the scene.

AA Live Traffic is showing the road is blocked between Accrington and Rising Bridge.

All lanes stopped due to crash on A56 both ways from A679 to A680 Blackburn Road (Rising Bridge Roundabout). A vehicle has crossed the central reservation. The road remains closed for emergency repairs.

A spokesperson for Lancashire Police said:

“We’re currently at the scene of a road closure on the A56 in both directions from the McDonald roundabout to the junction with Grane Rd.

The road is closed due to a road traffic collision and we anticipate this will be closed for some time.

We’ll provide an update once cleared and thank you in advance for your patience.”

Lancashire Fire & Rescue Service are also in attendance.

A spokesperson for LFRS said:

“At 14:07 on the 21st October 2024, three fire engines from Hyndburn, Preston and Rawtenstall along with the Urban Search and Rescue Team from Chorley attended a road traffic collision on the A56 Haslingden.

Firefighters used traffic tape, one hose reel jet and oil absorbent pads whilst making the scene safe.

Crews were in attendance for two and a half hours.”
