A new stop sign has been put in place at a notorious accident hotspot in Broughton.

Residents had been calling for the local council to take action after several collisions at the crossroads in Broughton had the community fearing that someone would be seriously injured or even killed if action wasn’t taken.

The crossroad that is on the A6 at the junction of Whittingham Lane has seen a number of collisions in recent weeks that have luckily not caused serious injury but considerable damage to cars with one even being flipped onto its roof.

The local council put the stop sign in place on Thursday.

Local residents are not convinced that the sign will make a difference.

One resident who did not wish to be named said,

The village is still seeing an increase in vehicles using it as a shortcut to continue on the A6 towards Garstang instead of using the bypass, which was put in place to alleviate traffic flow through the village.

The junction is dangerous with drivers speeding down Whittingham Lane and drivers not stopping to give way. A give way sign has not made a difference, and I can’t see a stop sign making a difference either. The junction needs to have traffic lights.

Residents have been voicing their opinions on social media, one commenter on a local community Facebook page said,

“Just driven through the junction to find the sign almost hidden from view adjacent to the building heading south. I had to look for it to see it. No where near the drivers eye line and void of a solid Stop line on the road, contradicting the sign with the give way markings. This will have no impact at all.

Another said, “The number of drivers I have seen who go through lights on red, I don’t think even traffic lights will make much difference at this junction.

Broughton In Amounderness Parish Council responded and said,

“Please can we respect the new STOP sign at the Crossroad and see if it does make a difference.

Assuming it won’t when it has not been tried is counterproductive.
