Levenshulme Building Fire Under Investigation

Large plumes of smoke could be seen billowing across the skies on Friday morning

Emergency services attended the fire on Friday morning.

At the height of the fire twelve appliances from Greater Manchester and Cheshire were in attendance.

Homes nearby where evacuated as a precaution and roads around the site were cordoned off.

As of Friday evening the incident on Longden Road, Levenshulme, has now been scaled down and is no longer classed a major incident.

Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service firefighters, working alongside colleagues from Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service, have successfully brought the fire at a commercial premises under control.

Six GMFRS fire engines remain in attendance while firefighters deal with remaining hazards.

Crews will remain on the scene overnight and potentially over the weekend. Greater Manchester Police are carrying out further searches and investigations.Firefighters worked incredibly hard throughout the day to get this large fire under control and minimise impacts on the local community as much as possible. The incident level has now been scaled down.

Greater Manchester Fire & Rescue Services area manager Paul Fearnhead said,

“Our crews and colleagues from Greater Manchester Police will remain on site overnight and potentially over the weekend. Cordons remain in place while we deal with remaining hazards and our investigations continue.

“I would like to thank our crews from Greater Manchester and those from our neighbouring Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service for their exceptional work in tackling the fire in difficult conditions. We are grateful to the local community for their understanding and cooperation while this major incident was tackled.”

There is now a joint investigation between Gretaer Manchester Police and Greater Manchester Fire & Rescue Service.
