Second Man Arrested After 87-year-old Man Kidnapped In Oldham

One man arrested earlier has been released on bail whilst further enquiries are made.

A second man has been arrested as part of an investigation into the kidnap of an 87-year-old man in Oldham.

In a statement released at the weekend, Greater Manchester Police said,

“We have arrested a second man as part of our investigation into reports of an 87-year-old man who was forced into a car, attacked, and thrown out on a dark road in West Yorkshire.

The man, aged 24, was arrested this morning (22/09/2024) at an address in Royton on suspicion of kidnap. He remains in custody for questioning. This arrest follows an arrest we made on Thursday (19/09/2024); the man, aged 39, was arrested on suspicion of kidnap and has since been released on police bail pending further investigations.

These arrests are in relation to an incident that occurred at approximately 9pm on Sunday (15/09/2024) in the Lee Street area of Oldham. The 87-year-old victim was reportedly walking home when he was dragged into a black car and blindfolded, while demands were made for his money and personal items. He was attacked and eventually pushed out of the car in the Rishworth area of West Yorkshire. The man eventually found aid by knocking on a door at around 10.40pm.

Detective Inspector Emma Hulston, from GMP’s Major Incident Team, said: “We have arrested two men in connection with this shocking incident and our investigation team is making good progress in gathering evidence to establish the full circumstances.

“Whilst incidents of this nature can cause alarm in the community, we do believe it was an isolated incident with no wider threat to the public. Specialist officers are continuing to support the victim and detectives are working around the clock determined to bring offenders to justice.

“We are continuing to appeal to the public for information, dashcam or doorbell footage that could help us solve this crime and help hold all those responsible accountable.
