A teenager who thought he could get away on a suspected stolen bike was detained by police dog vinnie following a short pursuit in Rotherham on Thursday afternoon.

In a statement released today, South Yorkshire Police said,

“Following a pursuit in Rotherham, Police Dog Vinnie was hot on his paws in detaining a teenager on a suspected stolen bike.

Yesterday (19 September) around 12.30pm, a dog handler was on patrol in Brinsworth when they sighted a motorcycle with suspicious altercations to the registration plate.

The rider failed to stop, and a pursuit commenced. During the pursuit, the rider went the wrong way round a roundabout and mounted a kerb, with the officer making tactical contact with the bike to stop the pursuit.

The rider began to run, and PD Vinnie was quickly released from the car and gave chase.

Unable to outrun the six-year-old Belgium Malinois, the rider was quickly detained by his left arm.

The teenager, aged 17, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was arrested on suspicion of theft of a vehicle, dangerous driving and failing to stop. He has since been charged with all offences and will appear before youth court in October.

The motorcycle was reported stolen from Sheffield the day before and enquiries are on-going to return it to its owner.

Our police dogs are a huge asset to our frontline, their skills, speed and commitment is unmeasurable for their communities.
