Man Arrested After Drone Seen Flying Over Prison Wing

We are committed to doing all we can to tackle the issue that drones have for prisons in Cheshire, say Cheshire Police.

At Shortly before 1am this morning, Cheshire Police were called to HMP Risley following reports of a drone flying over one of the wings at the establishment.

Following a search of the area, officers located a vehicle, and a man was arrested for drug offences and being in possession of offensive weapons.

In a statement released today, Cheshire Police said,

“Officers have arrested a man following reports of a drone flying over a prison in Cheshire.

Shortly before 1am this morning, Tuesday 10 September, officers were called to reports of a drone flying over the Charlie Wing at HMP Risley.

Officers were quickly deployed to the scene and following a search of the area they located a man in a black Ford Mondeo on Silver Lane.

While searching the vehicle officers discovered a drone in the boot along with a small amount of cannabis. Two knives were also recovered along with a mobile phone.

The driver of the car, a 38-year-old man from Manchester, was arrested at the scene on suspicion of possession of Class B drugs, two counts of possession of a knife and conspiracy to convey class A and B items into a prison. 

The man remains in custody at this time where he is assisting officers with their enquiries.

Following the arrest Detective Inspector David Schofield said:

“While this investigation is in the early stages, we know that drones are often used to convey illegal items into prisons. We work closely with all the prisons in Cheshire, and we are committed to doing all we can to tackle the issue. “
