A man has been charged following an increase of thefts in a rural area of Preston over the weekend.

The incidents happened around the Cottam area which has seen a step up in police patrols in recent days.

In an update released by neighbourhood officers today, Lancashire Police said,

“Good afternoon,

An update regarding the many recent vehicle crimes in the Cottam area. Whole communities can be affected by crime regardless of whether individuals are direct victims of crime or not.

For example, anti-social behaviour can impact on perceptions of safety and have negative impacts on the local environment, while fear of crime can limit social functioning and impact community cohesion.

We are fully aware of the recent increase in reported (and unreported) crimes in the Cottam area relating to theft from motor vehicles vehicle interferences and break ins and appreciate how worrying and concerning this must be.

Since the reports received,we’ve had an increased presence in the area with targeted and directed patrols. And with very timely and vital assistance from residents in the Community a male was arrested on the 11th of August 2024 after being witnessed committing these offences.

He has subsequently been charged and remanded for offences including vehicle interference, going equipped to commit theft and other outstanding theft offences.

He will be appearing at Court today, enquiries are still very much ongoing, particularly with CCTV and it is hopeful that further offenders will be identified and dealt with soon.

The information and CCTV you send in, and continue to report is vital, and is received with sincere thanks. Please continue to report.
