Trio Sent To Prison For Combined Total Of 16 Years For Kidnap

Two men and one woman have been jailed for their part in a kidnap in Bradford. 

In a statement released after sentencing, West Yorkshire Police said,

“Zarie Jackson-Burchall, 27 of no fixed abode and Shanikae Smith-Gardener 29,  of Beaufort Street, Derby were both found guilty of kidnap and false imprisonment after a trial. 

Jahrico Smith Gardener, 25 of no fixed abode admitted blackmail, kidnap and false imprisonment prior to the trial. 

Two other women were found not guilty after a trial. 

It’s after an incident in Bradford on 12 August in 2022 where a third party report was made about a man being chased and assaulted through Lonsdale Street.

Officers arrived to find that the victim had been forced into a vehicle. The vehicle was then driven to an address in Sheffield on Popple Street where the man was held against his will and assaulted. 

The suspects then made calls to the victim’s family to demand money for his release. 

Officers were able to locate the suspects and armed officers entered the address and safeguarded the victim and made several arrests 

The victim suffered minor injuries. 

On 19 July at Bradford Crown Court the three defendants were sentenced to: 

Zarie Jackson-Burchall, was jailed for 6 years and 8 months
Shanikae Smith-Gardener was jailed for 5 years
Jahrico Smith Gardener was jailed for 5 years


Detective Chief Inspector Sam Freeman of West Yorkshire Police said: 

“We welcome the sentence in what has been a lengthy ordeal for the victim.

“This was a serious offence and these three offenders put the victim in fear for his life, luckily he only suffered minor injuries. 

“I hope this sentence goes someway into giving the victim some closure and justice.”
