Accrington Pub Apologies After External Marketing Company Post Distasteful Jay Slater Meme

A pub in Accrington has taken to social media to apologise after a marketing company caused disgust amongst the pub owners, family, and friends of a missing teenager by allegedly posting a sickening meme to its Facebook page.

It comes after Spanish authorities called off the search for the missing teen who hasn’t  been seen since Monday 17th June after returning to a B & B in the Rural De Teno Park area above the small village of Masca with two British men, which has understandably come as a massive blow to the family.

The meme posted to the Bees Knees pubs facebook page shows a photo of Jay Slater, 19 from Oswaldtwistle alongside a photo of a football with the caption ‘both not coming home’, has caused anger within the community that the missing teen once frequented.

The post was published earlier today and was soon deleted with the pub taking to social media to explain and apologise.

In a statement posted on its social media page, Bees Knees Accrington said,

“Apologies, the external social media guy posted something in bad taste, and we deleted it instantly. We will deal with this accordingly. Sorry for any offence caused.

They followed this up with another post saying,

“As stated, we are absolutely disgusted that a post of this nature has made it onto our Facebook pages. As a company, we would never support such a distasteful post, and as soon as it was spotted, it was deleted immediately. We fully understand that the damage has now been done, and we will be completing an internal review on the matter and discussing the matter with  Affordable Social, who run all our Facebook pages.

Again, I fully apologise to all that this has affected. ”

In a social media post from the external marketing company who are alleged to be responsible, Affordable Social, said,

“This morning, an employee posted something that does not reflect our brand standards or our client Bees Knees Accrington, and has caused offence to others and upset to those involved. We are deeply distressed by the post, which was removed minutes after being posted.

The employee responsible for this post no longer works for Affordable Social. We sincerely apologize to everyone affected by this incident.

We are committed to upholding our values and ensuring that such an incident does not occur again. Thank you for your understanding and support as we work to make things right.

Members of the public were quick to screenshot the distasteful post with one saying,

“How can they be so cruel, Jay is a local lad, and to see a local business posting something like this is sickening, especially when he was a customer too.”

A family friend also took to social media, saying,

“So this is how much I will never understand how cruel some people really are… Jays hometown he is a customer in the bar too and they posted that in error apparently, sickening, I mean sick how can anyone even share stuff like that, very disgusting and very disrespectful.”
