HM Coastguard Lytham have given some advice following the find of an unexploded ordnance yesterday on Lytham beach sparking an emergencies response that saw a 100 metre cordon put in place and homes evacuated whilst the incident was dealt with safely.
In a social media post, HM Coastguard Lytham said,
“Today, you may have seen local media reports of an item of ordnance found on the beach and taken away to a local property.
If you see something suspicious on the coast, please DO NOT touch it, pick it up or take it home. Leave it where it is, take photos or make notes about its size, what it looks like and call 999 and ask for the Coastguard.ย
Let the experts decide if it’s safe or not. Our Maritime Rescue Coordination Centres will send out a coastguard rescue team to secure the area, and the Royal Navy’s EOD experts can be called in to ensure the item is disposed of safety if appropriate.
Old ordnance can be unstable and extremely dangerous, please do not take any risks.
