A couple of late night swimmers sparked an multi agency emergency response after being seen in the sea near Blackpool North Pier.

A spokesperson for RNLI said, “Our RNLI Blackpool volunteers were called out at 9.16pm at to concern for safety of a two persons in the sea near to North Pier.  D class lifeboat Blackpool Endeavour was launched, and searches commenced in the area, with D Class Phyllis Rowan made ready for launch.  Whilst searching, two persons who had been swimming and self recovered were spoken to our Coastguard colleagues on scene on the shoreline.   Following this, the volunteer crews were stood down and returned to the Lifeboat Station.

With the current sea temperature at Blackpool recorded at 9 degrees C, this tasking is a timely reminder about cold water shock and how quickly hypothermia can set in, even with the strongest of swimmers, all considerations that should be taken before entering the sea

If you see anything that gives you any cause for concern when you’re at the coast please call 999 and ask for the Coastguard.
