Lancashire Fire & Rescue Service share images online illustrating the risks that drying tea towels have when placed into a tumble dryer.

Lancashire Fire & Rescue said in a social media post, ” Did you know that cotton tea towels and cloths which have contaminated with some types of cooking oils and massage oils may be at risk of fire from self-heating after they’ve been through the tumble drier?

We have recently attended several fires which have been caused by this self-heating. It can take many hours and can go unseen.

If you are involved in the catering industry or use acupuncture/massage oils please:

• Wash cotton items at hotter temperatures as this will remove more of these oils from your towels.

• Always allow the tumble drier to complete the cooling cycle at the end of its drying process.

• And make sure that the tea towels or cloths have cooled fully before you store them away.
