Police Investigate Courier Fraud In Chorley

Police in Chorley are investigating a courier fraud in which a vulnerable victim was targeted.

Lancashire Police said, “We are investigating a case of courier fraud in the Chorley area, and we’d like to ask people to talk to their elderly and vulnerable relatives and friends to give them some advice. Please advise them not to give their bank details over the phone, even to people claiming to be the police and banking employees, as a genuine employee of these organisations would never request someone’s bank cards or PINs.
The incident happened on 5th April when a vulnerable victim was contacted by phone by someone claiming to be from their bank, saying there has been some unusual activity on their account. The caller instructed them to put their bank cards under their doormat along with PINs, these were then collected and used for large transactions.

We have made a reassurance visit to the victim and their family to give them advice. We are still investigating the incident and would encourage anyone to report similar activity to the police.

DC Matt Gallagher said: “We want to highlight these cases to show how detrimental they can be to the victims, who lose their hard-earned money to fraudsters who have concocted sophisticated stories to con their victims into believing them.

“We are working as hard as we can to ensure that we find the people responsible and put them before the courts.

“We want to remind you that the police, or your bank, will never call you to ask you to withdraw money for any reason, including in connection with an investigation.

“Please let everyone know about these scams, especially any vulnerable people, including elderly relatives or neighbours, to ensure that they don’t become these scammers’ next victims.”

If you suspect that you, or someone you know may be a victim of Courier Fraud, you can contact us on 101, or to Action Fraud on 0300 1232040.
